Maintaining Your Lawn Mower – 5 Tips for a Longer Lasting Mower!

The lawn mower is perhaps one of the hardest working machines currently in use by a large amount of the global populous. From mowing lawns in Australia, to maintaining parks all over the United States, the lawn mower has built a valuable place for itself in the arsenal of modern humanity, and almost anyone from anywhere in the world would be quick to recognize its form and function. As with any tool, we are always looking for the best ways to ensure that our mowers will continue to run smoothly for as long as they can possibly last. Let's take a look at 5 ways to ensure that will get the most from your lawn mower.

  1. Cleaning
This is probably the most valuable thing you can do to keep your mower running smoothly. You should always brush off any grass clipping from the top of your mower, as well the blades. It's important that you take the time to do a thorough cleaning of all the components, especially the blades, at least a few times a year.

  2. Replace/Clean Air Filter
Many people are not aware that lawn mowers contain air filters, and as such often neglect to replace them, or to clean them if they are reusable. A dirty air filter will cause stress on the engine, and eventually lead to wear. Filters should be replaced a few times a year in order to keep the mower running well.

  3. Change Spark Plugs/Oil
Spark plugs create the initial ignition of the gasoline that runs the mower, and spark plugs should be changed once a year, along with the oil. Make sure that you choose the proper replacements for your plugs and oil to ensure that your mower stays in the best possible shape.

  4. Blade Sharpening
Dull mower blades will cause the grass to be cut in ragged patterns, and cause your lawn to look poorly maintained. The blades can be sharpened either by a professional, or at home using a file, or other sharpening tools. Blades should be sharpened at least once per year, and more if the mower is used very frequently.

  5. Limit Use
No matter how good a mower is, the more we use it the more it will begin to wear. This means that no matter how good our maintenance is, the best way to ensure the long life of a lawn mower is to treat it with respect, and use it as efficiently as possible so as not to put it through unneeded stress.

For those looking to get the most from their lawn mowers, proper maintenance is crucial. As we can see, there are many things that can, and should, be done to ensure the cleanliness and efficiency of our mowers. By following the above tips, your mower will run smoothly and be cutting grass with precision for years to come!
